Fremont East Entertainment District

When you think of Las Vegas, you automatically think of The Strip. But, there is a new and exciting revitalization happening in Downtown Las Vegas, known as Fremont East Entertainment District. Once an area mainly geared toward tourists, today Downtown is all about local restaurants, shops, unique events and innovative businesses. Zappos CEO, Tony Hsieh, has made it a personal mission to revive the area with the Downtown Las Vegas Project which will transform the Downtown into a place for people with a passion for their community.

If you haven’t been to the area recently, we’ve pulled together our favorite places and events that are a must-try. Head Downtown, why don’t you?

Park on Fremont

The Park on Fremont is unlike any other restaurant you will experience in Downtown Las Vegas. On top of the delicious entrees, you can enjoy gastro pub fare, an impressive beer selection in the beer garden and amazing handcrafted cocktails. While you drink and dine with friends, you can enjoy the park-like setting with shabby-chic furniture, antique style lampposts and a communal table under the shade of live oaks and extensive trellising. Trust us, you won’t want to leave. For more information, visit http://www.parkonfremont.com

La Comida

This upscale restaurant ups the dining ante for Downtown Las Vegas. Owned by Michael and Jenna Morton, La Comida offers a terrific twist on authentic Mexican food and their chefs, Pablo Sanchez-Ortiz and Bill DeMarco, have perfected classic dishes such as elotes asados, a Mexican style street corn. Try the puerso ahumado, or smoked pork marinated in four chilies, as it has become an instant favorite since the restaurant opened in May. For more information, visit https://www.facebook.com/LaComidaLV.

On top of their perfectly crafted coffees, you can also purchase a number of wines and beers. The Beat also offers weekly events such as Open Mic Night and a fun Trivia Night that will keep you coming back. For more information, visit http://www.thebeatlv.com/index.html.

What the Future Holds

Tony Hsieh will be moving the Henderson Zappos offices to the old city hall in Downtown Las Vegas in 2014. Hsieh is investing, not only in his company, but in the community, by paying $350 million out of pocket to provide housing, small business opportunities, education and tech startups for his employees and all local residents in the Downtown area. Hsieh plans to revamp the Downtown by building the 150-seat Inspire Theater and using repurposed shipping containers to create what will be known as the “Downtown Containter Park”, which will open in October, and provide space for more small businesses, shops and restaurants. There is no doubt his vision for Downtown has only encouraged more businesses, like those listed above, to give Fremont East Entertainment District a chance and so should you.
